What the Quran says

Synonyms of the word 'flat'

(2:22) It is He who made the earth a bed for you… (firasha)

(13:3) And it is He who spread the earth… (madda)

(20:53 and 43:10) He made for you the earth like a cradle… (mahdan)

(50:7) And the earth, We have extendet it… (madadnaha)

(51:48) …and how We have leveled the earth. (farashnaha)

(71:19) And Allah has made for you the earth like a carpet… (bisata)

(78:6) Have We not made the earth a layer? (mihada)

(88:20) …and the earth, how it is flattened! (sutehat)

(15:19) And the earth We have spread it, and placed therein firm mountains… (madadnaha)

Each term listed above reflects the concept of a flat and spread out earth, thus excluding the presence of a curvature characteristic of a sphere. Additionally, this understanding is reinforced by other verses.

The flat and extended Earth

(79:30) And the earth, after that, He spread it out (dahaha).

The Arabic word "دَحَىٰهَا" (daḥāhā) comes from the root "دحو" (dḥw) and means to spread out, smooth, level, make flat and even.

Absence of curvature

(20:105-107) They ask you about the mountains. Say: "(At the time of the Last Judgment) my Lord will reduce them to dust and leave in their place a barren plain, where you will see neither irregularities nor elevations."

This verse unveils the true nature of our world, refuting claims of those who perceive the earth as a curved sphere. In the absence of mountains and hills, it will be revealed to us that the earth was but a vast flat expanse.

The stationary earth

(40:64) It is Allah who has made for you the earth as an immobile dwelling and the sky as a canopy, and has given you shape – and made your shapes beautiful.

The term "قرار" (qarār) in Arabic comes from the root "ق-ر-ر" (q-r-r), conveying notions of "stopping", "remaining", and "being fixed". The Tafsir of Ibn Kathir reinforces this understanding, stating that this verse describes an immobile earth, devoid of movement. A static earth does not align with the image of a globe rotating on its axis, moving through a hypothetical universe.

(21:33) And it is He who created the night and the day, the sun and the moon; all in an orbit are moving.

Many verses mention the movement of the sun, the moon, and the stars. However, no verse suggests that the earth is in motion, thus contrasting with the movements and trajectories of celestial entities.

The vault of the sky

(79:28) He raised its vault high and perfectly ordered it.

A vault is a defined structure with a beginning and an end. This structured and delimited element contradicts the concept of a continuous atmosphere enveloping the sky.

The perfectly protected roof

(21:32) And We made the sky a perfectly protected roof, yet they turn away from Our signs.

This verse reveals that the sky is a solid and impenetrable roof, contrary to the claims of science promoted by the elite. Furthermore, it highlights that many choose to ignore the reality of creation as it is revealed in the Book of the Almighty, thus confirming the prevalent misguidance in the end times.

The impassable sky

(55:33) O company of jinn and mankind, if you are able to pass beyond the regions of the heavens and the earth, then pass. But you will not pass except with an unlimited power.

In this verse, it is clear that the Almighty affirms our confinement within this world during our lifetimes. How then, could a believer accept claims that we have breached the boundaries of our world to reach distant planets? No, leaving earth is a claim that could only be accomplished with divine power, a power we, as mere creatures, do not possess.

The alignement of the frequented House

(52:4) And [by] the frequented House.

The Sahihs of Bukhari (3207) and Muslim (164) specify that the heavenly abode, Al-Bait Al-Ma'mour is in the seventh heaven and is visited daily by angels. Additionally, the Tafsirs of Ibn Kathir and Jalalain indicate that this frequented House is in perfect alignment with the Kaaba in Mecca. It is evident that such alignment is incompatible with a supposed rotation of the earth.

The sun comes from the East

(2:258) Abraham said to Nimrod: "My Lord is He who gives life and death." The other said: "I too give life and death." Then Abraham said: "Since Allah brings the sun from the East, make it come from the West." The disbeliever was then confounded.

When Abraham (PBUH) uttered these words, his understanding was in the literal sense of the term. His assertion is, therefore, not metaphorical but indeed literal. The sun comes from the East, traverses our sky, and then disappears to the West. Who then would dare to contest the wisdom of Abraham (PBUH), the intimate friend of the Almighty?

A lamp on the scale of the earth

(71:16) ...and made the moon a light and the sun a lamp.

In this verse, the Creator refers to the sun as being "a lamp." This description is intriguing because a lamp is of reduced dimension in relation to the spaces it illuminates. Strictly speaking, this analogy does not align with the heliocentric theory, which presents the sun as a massive celestial body located outside the nearest sky to the earth.

The gates of Heaven

(54:10-11) Noah then called upon his Lord: "I am overcome. Grant victory (to Your cause)." So, We opened the gates of heaven with water pouring forth.

This verse mentions gates in the sky that were opened to pour down torrential water. However, organizations like NASA assert that only empty space exists beyond our atmosphere, without any gates or water. Thus, this verse reveals to us a different reality, incompatible with the theses of our time.

The sun precedes the moon

(91:2) And by the moon as it follows the sun.

The term "follow" implies that one thing precedes another, which follows it. This verse is in accordance with a world where both the sun and the moon move above the earth, the moon trailing the sun. Once again, the Creator's word contradicts the heliocentric model, where the moon orbits around the earth and the earth around the sun.

Darkness pursuing the day

(7:54) He covers the day with the night, which incessantly chases after it.

This description is consistent with a perspective in which darkness follows the day, symbolized by the movement of the sun. In contrast, in the heliocentric model, the day emerges from the night due to the presumed rotation of the earth and then returns to darkness, lacking any concept of "pursuit." This verse also does not align with the notion of a rotating globe.

The distance between the East and the West

(43:38) When he comes to Us, he will say [to his demon], "If only there were between you and me the distance between the East and the West."

In this verse, East and West are not merely directions, but locations, representing the greatest possible distance between two points. This understanding of distance contradicts the concept of a spherical Earth, for on a sphere, East and West are not fixed extremities but relative directions depending on a specific viewpoint. In contrast, on a flat Earth, East and West are two fixed extremities.

Celestial objects in the nearest sky

(25:61) Blessed is He who has placed in the sky [singular] constellations, and has placed therein a lamp (the sun) and also a moon giving light.

Here it is said that the sun, the moon, and the stars are positioned in the sky that we can see, not in a distant and inaccessible space.

(37:6) We have indeed adorned the nearest sky with the adornment of stars.

(41:12) And We adorned the nearest sky with lamps and protected it.

The nearest sky is the one that we observe every day. The stars are not distant objects in boundless space but ornaments placed in the visible sky. Thus, the description in the Quran contradicts modern notions, which postulate that the stars are located outside a presumed solar system, at unimaginable distances.

What the Sunnah says

The ends of the earth

Thauban reported that the Messenger of Allah said: "Allah has brought the ends of the earth closer to me, and I have seen its ends to the West and to the East. And (He told me that) the dominion of my community would extend to the ends that had been folded near to me." (Muslim  2889a)

There are no ends on a spherical earth, and it goes without saying that a globe cannot be folded.

Allah descends to the nearest sky

The Messenger of Allah said: "Every night, when the last third of the night arrives, our Lord descends to the nearest sky and says: 'Is there anyone to invoke Me, so that I may respond to his invocation? Is there anyone to ask Me, so that I may grant his request? Is there anyone to seek My forgiveness, so that I may forgive him?'" (Bukhari 7494)

This authentic hadith makes no sense on an alleged globe.

Not refuting the prophets' knowledge

In the times of the prophets, there was no doubt about the fundamental nature of things. People were aware that the earth is flat and that above our sky extend the seven heavens  (see Heavens & earth).

It is essential that believers who support the concept of a spherical earth understand the implications of their conviction. By suggesting that the earth is a globe, they are implying that the Creator left His prophets in ignorance of His own creation. Furthermore, by claiming to have a deeper understanding than the prophets, they are insinuating that the latter did not possess true knowledge.

Therefore, believers who claim to adhere to the sacred texts must ask themselves which word they wish to follow: that of the incredulous elite who mislead the masses, or that of the Creator?

What the Bible says
The Update and the obsolete versions
The Torah and the Gospel are the previous Books of Allah, and therefore, it is not surprising that the Scriptures preceding the Quran also refute the theory of a spherical earth, mentioning, among other things, the stationary earth, the impenetrable firmament, the waters located above the firmament, the foundations of the earth etc.

However, these texts have undergone alterations over time, generating more than 100 blatant contradictions. As a result, the Creator has revealed the ultimate prophecy that corrects the falsifications of the previous Books and restores the Truth until the end of times. Thus, the Quran reestablishes pure monotheism and, by preserving its original form and the absence of any contradiction, it is the final Scripture for believers. Ultimately, the Quran acts as a bulwark against errors, manifesting as the ultimate anti-virus, after the previous versions have become obsolete.
